BSLS Annual Conference 2027: Call for Papers

The twenty-second annual conference of the British Society for Literature and Science will take place at the University of Oxford’s Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities from Thursday 1st to Saturday 3rd April 2027 (in person).

Our keynote speakers will include Liliane Campos (Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris) and Rosalind Powell (University of Amsterdam).

The BSLS invites proposals for twenty-minute papers, or panels of three papers, or roundtables, on any subjects within the field of literature (broadly defined to include theatre, film, and television) and science (including medicine and technology). The BSLS remains committed to supporting and showcasing work on all aspects of literature and science, including (but not limited to) animal studies, disability studies, the medical humanities, eco-criticism and the environmental humanities, science fiction studies, the blue humanities, and more.

Abstracts of about 200 words (no more than 1800 characters), together with the name, email, and institutional affiliation of the speaker, should be submitted via this form.  To propose a panel, please submit a separate form for each speaker, giving the panel title in the appropriate box.

The closing date for submissions is Friday 11th December 2026. We intend to communicate decisions by 11th January 2027, with the draft programme to follow by 11 February.

As with previous BSLS conferences held in cities, we will not be arranging accommodation, but we will provide information about hotels etc. in Oxford. On the Friday evening, the conference dinner (optional) will be held at Merton College, Oxford.
